STATE RECOGNITION: From left: Rick Bossingham, assistant commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management; Bill Torline, operations manager at Madison Chemical Co., Inc.; Dan Hodges, vice president and chief financial officer at Madison Chemical Co., Inc.; Thomas Easterly, IDEM commissioner; and Steve Hale, Madison Chemical Co., Inc. technical director, display a flag that shows Madison Chemical Co., Inc. is part of the Indiana Environmental Stewardship Program.

(Madison, Indiana - December 3rd, 2008) - Madison Chemical Co., Inc. was welcomed into the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's Environmental Stewardship Program on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2008 for its work on reducing the amount of phosphates in its products.

The company has committed to reducing phosphates in its products by 17,800 pounds by the end of 2009. The reduction will come from a new line of cleaners for the food industry, a non-phosphate conversion coating for the metal industry, and several phosphate-free cleaners for the metal industry, according to IDEM's Web site.

Madison Chemical Co., Inc. is one of 38 companies in the Environmental Stewardship Program.

"You would think there would be hundreds of companies in the program, but there's not," Thomas Easterly, the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, said as he awarded the company a plaque and a flag with the program's name on it. "You're the cream of the crop."

The company's new product replaces a line of iron phosphates in the conversion coating process, which allows the paint on metal articles, such as painted desks and cars, to adhere better and last longer, technical director Steve Hale said.

Madison Chemical Co., Inc. customers will save 15 percent to 25 percent with the new formula.

Easterly said the new formula will help other companies be more environmental as well because they won't have to deal with the phosphates and the pollution they cause. "We appreciate it because it's good for the environment and good for you," Easterly said.

Environmental Stewardship Program members get expedited review of their permits, flexibility in permitting, less frequent reporting requirements and coordination of their compliance inspections, according to the IDEM Web site. They must report to IDEM about their environmental initiatives once a year and reapply for membership in the Environmental Stewardship Program every three years.

"In a rapidly changing landscape of raw material pricing and availability, Madison Chemical Co., Inc. offers innovation, flexibility and responsiveness to the marketplace," David R. Goodman, president of Madison Chemical Co., Inc. was quoted on the IDEM Web site. "We meet these needs by continually evaluating formulations, finding innovative solutions to best meet our customer needs."
