TROUBLESHOOTING LAPPING PROBLEMS
Productivity Problems (Time to lap a load of parts)
- Input irregularities.
- Abrasive and / or vehicle.
- Stock removal rate.
Parallelism Problems
- Did you lap both sides?
- Did total stock removal per side exceed
the size variation of the part?
- You need at least 3 to 5 pieces / rings
(preferably 5).
- Did you transpose the pieces?
- Did you use a pad when the reference
side was lapped?
Size Problems
If parts coming to the lapper are batch processed,
you could have some parts that are more oversized than others.
Flatness Problems
- Remember that flatness is influenced by the part and
the machine.
- Is the part warped?
- Are you lapping with too much pressure?
- Is the material unstable?
- Some materials have internal stresses that are relieved
when the material is worked.
Lap Plate Flatness
- Monitor your lap plate flatness.
- Monitor the adjustments required to maintain a flat
plate.
- Keep the tolerance band on your lap plate flatness
within .001″, overall, despite what your part might require.
